The Cougars improve to 7-5-1 on the year, while Winthrop drops to 6-9-1.
Despite out-shooting the Eagles 12-1 in the first half, the Cougars could not get one through the net and went into halftime with the scoreless 0-0 tie.
Cougar accuracy improved dramatically in the second half as Teryn Shuetz found the back of the net just four-and-a-half minutes in (49:37) off the assist by Carolym Morris. Charleston added the insurance goal at 62:31 when Crystal Petroccoro netted her third goal of the season off Christina Hobgood's corner kick to send the game to 2-0.
Abi Nicholas led the Cougar effort with four shots, while Rachel Wyman, Lindsey Estes and Michael Sonefeld led Winthrop with one shot each. For the game Charleston held the 20-3 shot advantage. The Cougars held the Eagles to just one corner kick while putting together eight, one resulting in the second goal.
The Cougars host Elon Oct. 17th at Patriots Point in a 7:00 PM game. Winthrop hosts Charleston Southern Oct. 22nd in a 6:00 PM match.
