The Cougars (10-3-2) took a 2-0 lead into halftime and never let up scoring three goals over a 20 minute span in the second half. Five different players scored goals.
Ricardo D. Granados got the Cougars on the board in the 6th minute. Granados headed a ball into the net off a service from Matt Schindelholz. Drew Cavanagh also assisted on the play. Jeremy Gold made it 2-0 in the 39th minute off a corner kick. Sage Martina's corner found Gold wide open at the back of the net and his shot deflected off a defender into the net. Winthrop's best opportunity in the first half came in the 36th minute from Michael Chumah, but goalkeeper Keith Wiggins was there to close the door. Wiggins finished the game with five saves to help the College of Charleston preserve its sixth straight shutout victory. Troy Lesesne scored in the 64th minute. Steve Loverso served the ball into the box to Jeremy Gold, who dropped the ball back to Lesesne. Lesense placed the ball into the upper right corner for the goal. Ben Hollingsworth and Loverso added the next two goals. There were opportunities for the Eagles to get on the board in the 61st minute when Vali Arnason's shot was blocked out of bounds at the goal line by a Cougar defender. Chumah had a shot that just went over the bar just seconds later off the corner kick.
The College of Charleston finished with a 18-13 shot advantage.
Winthrop will wrap-up its Big South Conference schedule on Tuesday against Radford on the road at 7 p.m. The Cougars travel to South Carolina Nov. 4, for a 7:00 p.m. match with the Gamecocks.
