The loss sends the Catamounts to 7-10-2 on the year and 4-7 in the Southern Conference. The win gives the Cougars an 11-6-2 overall record and 7-3-1 league mark. The 11 wins tie the Charleston record for most wins, while the winning percentage is tops for the school. The last time the Cougars won 11 matches was during the 1999 season when the team went 11-8-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars went on the board just 3:45 into the second half after the first shot that Wigfall took deflected back to her for the second chance goal at the 48:45 mark. Western Carolina answered at 74:22 when Natalie Turgeon sent her shot just over the arms of Cougar goalkeeper Alice Keeney. Regulation would end with the score knotted at 1-1.
The first overtime came and went with no score and it looked as though the second would also until just 1:21 left in the game when Wigfall took the pass from Jamie Stewart and drove the ball in for the score at 108:39.
The Cougars led the match in shots 18-10, with the Catamounts taking the saves advantage 9-6. Carolyn Morris led Charleston with five shots, while Casey Davis led the Catamounts with three shots.
Both teams will prepare to travel to Greensboro, NC for the Southern Conference tournament Nov. 6-9.
