The Hilltoppers go to 2-3-1, while the Cougars go to 3-2-1.
After a scoreless first half Western Kentucky scored early in the second when Trey Alexander sent the ball over the line off the Steven Medlock assist.
The lone Cougar goal came in the 75th minute when Ricardo Diaz Granados sent a Ben Hollingsworth cross into the top right corner of the net from six feet out.
The Cougars out-shot the Hilltoppers 24-10, but it was Western Kentucky that led in saves, 10-3.
Granados led the Cougars in shots with eight while Hollingsworth and Jeff Files followed with four apiece. Richard Mupfudze led Western Kentucky with four shots.
The Cougars take a day off before continuing the Classic on Sunday with a 2:00 PM match against host Vanderbilt. Western Kentucky plays Davidson in the noon game Sunday.
