The loss sends the Cougars to 5-4, while Rutgers improves to 4-3-2 on the year.
Both teams started the first half with several attempts at the net but it was Rutgers who put one through as Zach Zimi notched his first goal of the year, sending it past goalkeeper Keith Wiggans for the eventual game-winner the 17:05 mark. Tommy Gray picked up his first assist of the season on the play.
Rugters had several opportunities throughout the game but Wiggans had seven saves to keep the game close. For the contest Rutgers out-shot Charleston 17-4, while the Cougars held the 7-2 advantage on saves.
Ben Hollingsworth, Darren Toby, Juan Carlos Londono and Scott Milroth all had one shot each for the Cougars, while Chris Karcz led Rutgers with five shots on the night.
The College of Charleston continues tournament action Sun, Oct. 3rd when it takes on St. John's in a 1:30 PM match.
