The Red Storm was the NCAA tournament runner-up last season.
The Cougars improve to 6-4, while St. John's moves to 6-2-1 on the year.
The game was tied early in the first half with both teams missing on a couple of opportunities, but it was Cougar Ben Hollingsworth who took a cross from George Grygar inside the box at 23:13 to give Charleston the go ahead score. It was Hollingsworth's third goal of the year and Grygar's third assist.
The second half was much similar to the first half with no team scoring and ended the same way, with the Cougars winning 1-0.
St. John's led in shots, 15-9 with Ryan Kelly leading with the team with five of his own. Cougars Hollingsworth and Troy Lesesne led with two shots apiece. Both goalkeepers had four saves each, with St. John's edging Charleston in corner kicks, 5-4.
Keith Wiggans earned Tournament Defensive MVP honors, while teammate Keion Yearwood earned All-Tournament honors.
The College of Charleston travels to Appalachian State Oct. 5th for a 7:30 PM match-up.
