The loss was the first home loss in the series for the Eagles, as they had taken the five previous Statesboro meetings between the two clubs.
Wertis, a sophomore midfielder, collected an assist on the Cougars' second goal, as she fed the ball to Teryn Schuetz, who then directed a well-placed kick past Eagle keeper Laura-Ashley Harris in the 53rd minute of play for her third goal of the season. Halfway through the 77th minute of play, Wertis managed to add a goal herself, her second of the season, as she stole the ball in front of the Georgia Southern net, knocking it out of Harris' reach.
Abi Nicholas accounted for the first goal for College of Charleston (8-4-3, 5-2-2 SoCon), as she tallied her score, her second goal of the season, with just over four minutes remaining in the first half.
Freshman Colleen Deignan and sophomore Colleen Znosko each notched two shots to pace Georgia Southern (4-8-1, 2-5-0 SoCon), while Nicholas' five shots and Schuetz's four paced the Cougars.
In the net, Harris played the full stretch, saving 10 of the 13 shots on goal she faced, while her Cougar counterpart Emily Brenner saved both of the shots on goal directed towards her.
