The Cougars, who were ranked 26th this week in the Soccer News Top 30, pick up their first tie of the season and go to 11-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern goes to 5-5-4 and 2-2-1. The tie gives the College of Charleston a new school Division I record seven straight non-losses.
For much of the first half both team kept the ball in the midfield with Charleston only garnering one more shot in the first 45 minutes, 3-2.
Georgia Southern would provide the first action in the second half, as Lawrence Smith sent the first of his two goals of the night into the back of the net at 59:00 off a corner kick. Charleston answered at 71:39 when Danile Azcarate scored his second career-goal after a previous shot was blocked down to his feet. Just eight minutes later at 79:06 Smith answered again for the Eagles, taking the assist from Chad Kilpatrick in for the score to take GSU back up, 2-1. That lead would last three minutes as Darren Toby scored off Keion Yearwood at 82:53 to take the game to 2-2 and into overtime.
Charleston out-shot Georgia Southern 5-3 in the overtime periods but could not punch one in. The Cougars had a goal reversed early in the second overtime period after the assistant referee called offside on one of the players; that would be as close as the Cougar would get with the final coming down to the 2-2 tie.
Smith dominated the Eagle offense, taking six shots and converting on two of them to lead the team. Toby led the Cougars with four shots. For the game Charleston out-shot GSU 14-9, but were edged in corner kicks, 7-4. The Eagles came away with four saves to Charleston none. It was a game full of conflict as Georgia Southern was tagged for 30 fouls, while the Cougars picked up 17. One red card and five yellow cards were thrown during the contest.
Georgia Southern hosts Elon Oct. 31st at 1:00 PM, while the Cougars host 1st-ranked UNC Greensboro Oct. 30th at 6:00 PM for the Southern Conference regular-season championship.
