"All year long the focus has been on team unity and one goal, a strong showing at conference," said head coach Amy Schuckert. "The environment that we have built within the program makes this time of year very exciting."
The women come into the competition led by Ashley Arnold and Kyle Palmquist. Arnold, a freshman from Lexington, Ky., has finished in the top-14 in all of her races this year. She has been named SoCon Runner-of-the-week twice this season and earned two first place finishes and two second place finishes. Palmquist was named SoCon Runner-of-the-Week once this year and has finished in the top 15 of every race she has run this year. The top finish the women have ever had as a team is sixth in 2000.
"The women are looking to improve on our ninth place finish at conference last year," stated Schuckert. "We believe we have made some great strides in the conference and are excited to see our hard work pay off."
The men are led by Ben Phillips, who is the Cougars' top returning finisher from last year's championships. One of the top runners on the men's side, freshman Jim Alexander, will not be competing due to a stress fracture. The highest finish the men have ever finished at the SoCon Championships is seventh in 1998.
"Our men have been forced to re-adjust with the injury to Jim," commented Schuckert. "The guys know they need to step it up and I think they will respond well to the challenge."
The races will be broadcast live on www.soconsports.com beginning at 8:30am with the pre-race show and will continue through the men's and women's championship races. Admission is free for fans wishing to attend the event.
