Charleston improves to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, while Appalachian falls to 5-5 and 1-2 in league play.
Schindelholz?s tally came off of a counter-attack by the Cougars, who gained possession on the ASU side of midfield. Ben Hollingsworth played the ball down the right side to Schindelholz who lifted a shot past Mountaineer goalkeeper Philip Cavicchia (Brampton, Ont.).
Keith Wiggans earned the shutout for the Cougars by stopping five ASU shots on the evening. The shutout was Wiggans? second in a row. Cavicchia collected three saves in goal for Appalachian.
The loss was just Appalachian?s second defeat in the friendly confines of Kidd Brewer Stadium in the past three seasons.
ASU attempted to equalize the match with a number of scoring chances in the final 20 minutes of the match. The Mountaineers? best scoring chance went awry when freshman Tate Parrish (Acworth, Ga.) hit the left post with a blast from 10 yards out.
In all, ASU out-shot the Cougars 15-13 and held a seven-to-four advantage in corner kicks.
Appalachian will again entertain a SoCon foe when Georgia Southern comes to town on Sunday. The match is slated to begin at noon. The Cougars travel to Furman Oct. 9th for a 6:00 PM matchup.
