Martin opened the scoring with the eventual game winner at the 65:43 mark. Freshman Gena Villari led Tucker with a pass left of the box. Tucker's cross found a charging Martin inside the six-yard box at the far post where she chested the shot in for her second goal of the season.
Betton, a freshman, tallied her second goal of her career less than 12 minutes later. Tara Marker's free kick foundthe head of Catie Miller, who redirected the ball to Betton on the right side of the six-yard box. Betton booted a shot past Cougar keeper Emily Brenner for the final 2-0 margin at 77:06.
After a scoreless first half that featured Furman holding a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots, the Lady Paladins outshot the Cougars 10-4 in the final 45 minutes. The College of Charleston finished with a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The shutout was the second straight for Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw who was forced into making only two saves in the match. Brenner totaled seven stops for the Cougars.
Furman improves to 4-7-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Southern Conference with the victory, while the College of Charleston falls to 4-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.
The Lady Paladins return to action Friday night when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to face the Chattanooga Lady Mocs at 7:00 PM. The Cougar host East Tennessee State Oct. 7th at 7:00 PM.
