College of Charleston's Marketta Talley scored 16 points, while Patrice Bryant added 11 to lead the women's basketball team to the 60-50 win over Georgia Southern this afternoon in front of 316 fans at the
John Kresse Arena.
Georgia Southern falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the SoCon as the Eagles dropped their fourth straight. The College of Charleston rebounds from its loss at Chattanooga to improve to 3-2 and 1-1.
The Cougars led 5-2 early in the first half before the Eagles went on an 11-0 run to go up 13-5 before a lay-up by Christine Williams at 12:01 ended the Charleston drought. Charleston then went on an 8-2 run of its own to pull to within two at 15-13. Georgia Southern pulled away 18-15 before the Cougars came back to take the 19-18 lead at 3:47. The score remained close for the remainder of the half with the Ealges leading 23-22 at intermission. No team shot extremely well with the Eagles shooting 27.6 percent and the Cougars 25.0 percent from the field. Charleston was 4-19 from beyond the three-point line, while GSU was two-for-six.
Most of the second half was a continuation of the first with the lead changing back and forth. With the score tied 42-42 with 6:53 left in the game, the Cougars began to pull away, scoring 18 points over the next six minutes to the Eagles eight and took the 10-point 60-50 win.
Shooting improved for both teams in the second half. Charleston shot 46.2 percent from the field and Georgia Southern shot 35.5 percent. For the game the Cougars held a 33.9 percentage, while the Eagles shot 31.7 percent. Both teams did not shoot well from three-point range; Georgia Southern shot 33.3 percent and Charleston shot 31.0 percent. Free throws were not much better as the Eagles shot 40.0 percent and the Cougars shot 52.9 percent.
Kellie Tiller led the Eagles with 13 points, while Nicole Newton led in rebounds with 11. Aside from Bryant's 11 points, she had eight rebounds to pace Charleston. The Eagles led 53-40 in rebounds and turnovers 24-17.
Georgia Southern hosts Mercer Dec. 15th at 5:00 PM in Hanner Fieldhouse, while the Cougars begin a seven-game road trip with a game at Davidson Dec. 17th at 7:00 PM.
