Patrice Bryant scored the second double-double of her career to lead the College of Charleston to the 59-54 win over Coastal Carolina in women's basketball action this afternoon in front of 1253 fans at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Coastal got off to a good start as four free throws by Kim Turner gave the Lady Chanticleers a 9-2 lead with 15:38 left. A 7-0 run by the Cougars quickly evaporated that, as Patrice Bryant's jumper tied the game at nine at 14:27. A jumper from Jasmine Tyler at 10:44 gave Coastal a four-point lead, but the College of Charleston quickly answered, as a Tiffany Green jumper at 8:24 put College of Charleston in front 16-15. The Cougars went on an 8-0 run capped off by two Erica Nesmith free throws at 5:58 and had a 33-21 lead at 1:50 on a three-pointer from Rachel King.
Coastal was 6-of-16 from the field in the first half, but only had seven total rebounds, compared to 23 for the Cougars. Tyler had 12 points to lead the Lady Chants, while Turner had eight in only nine minutes. Bryant had eight first-half points for the Cougars.
Coastal started the second half like it did the first, cutting the Cougar lead to four at 16:58 on two free throws from junior Amber Rose. The College of Charleston extended the lead to eight at 15:53 on two Erica Irick free throws, but a Turner jumper at 14:02 cut the lead to 41-39. The lead got down to 45-44 at 10:53 on a three-point play from sophomore Vanessa Laug. The Cougars extended the lead back to 53-45 on a Marketta Talley layup, but when Rose hit a jumper at 4:22, the CofC lead was back down to three. Turner hit a layup at 3:41 that cut it to 54-53 and at 1:59, hit 1-of-2 free throws that tied the game at 54. Tyler picked off Talley to give CCU the ball, but senior Courtney Brown missed a three and Coastal turned the ball back over to the Cougars. Bryant was fouled by Brown with 42 seconds left and made both free throws. The Lady Chants then had another turnover, and two free throws by Talley sealed the game.
Turner had 18 points while playing only 22 minutes due to foul trouble. Tyler ended the game with 12 points and five steals, while Brown had six rebounds. Sophomore Alisha Dill added four assists.
Bryant's double-double was made up of her 16 points and 14 rebounds. Four other Cougars followed Bryant with seven points apiece. CofC outrebounded CCU 44-26, while Coastal shot 42.9 percent from the field, compared to 35.1 for the Cougars.
Coastal will take 10 days off for the holidays and return to the court Dec. 29, against South Carolina in the South Carolina Tournament. Game time is at 7:45 p.m., in Columbia, S.C. The Cougars are at Stetson Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
