Patrice Bryant scored a game-high 13 points but it would not be enough as Cougars fell to the Lady Mocs 71-35 in women's basketball action in front of 1361 fans this afternoon at the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.
With the game tied 2-2 at 18:16, the Mocs went on a 15-0 run to go up 17-2 with 13:27 left in the first half. A three-pointer by Rachel King ended the UTC Cougar drought. The Cougars pulled to within eight points twice in the first half, but junior Katasha Brown hit a layup at 7:23 to start a 13-2 run capped off on a jumper by Tiffani Roberson to close out the half.
Despite the 34-15 score at halftime, Charleston only trailed Chattanooga, 21-17 in rebounds, 12-10 in turnovers and 29-26 in shots attempted. However, the Cougars were 1-for-8 in three-pointers and had no free-throw attempts. Charleston shots 26.9 percent from the floor for the half with the Mocs shooting 41.1.
In the second half the Mocs were able to contain the Cougars and increase the rebound and turnover margins
Chattanooga outrebounded the Cougars 54-31 marking the third time UTC has tallied at least 50 boards this season. For the fifth game this year, Nicole Mattison led the Lady Mocs in rebounding with a game-high 11. Erika Smith pulled down five defensive boards to lead Charleston.
The Lady Mocs were 9-of-24 from the 3-point line and shot 39.3 percent from the field, while the Cougars shot 27.3 percent from the field and were 3-of-11 from the free throw line.
Laura Hall, a freshman guard, led UTC with 13 points hitting 3-of-4 from the 3-point line and draining all four of her foul shots.
Late in the game, freshman Brooke Hand found her range hitting three 3-pointers to close out the game with 11 points on 3-of-12 shooting from the perimeter.
College of Charleston was led by Patrice Bryant with 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting.
Chattanooga will host High Point Monday, Dec. 6 in McKenzie Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 PM. The Cougars will return home to host Georgia Southern at 4:00 PM Dec. 11th.
