VCU's first goal came at the 22:02 from Dominic Oduro off the Samuel Asante assist. 15 Minutes later at 37:05, VCU took the lead up 2-0 with the score by Mike Aust. The assist was credited to Veit Schaidinger. That lead would hold going into the second half.
Charleston cut the margin to one in the second half with a goal at 59:32 from Troy Lesesne, who was assisted by Darren Toby. The Cougars had several attempts the rest of the half but could not convert and VCU came away with the 2-1 victory.
The Cougars out-shot VCU 14-2 and had more saves at 6-3. The College of Charleston also led in corner kicks 6-3.
Ricardo Opoku led VCU with five shots, while Tony Myers led the Cougars with three shots.
Charleston will face Richmond for its second game of tournament action Sunday Sept. 19th with a 12:30 first kick.
