Richmond got off to a quick start as freshman Sam Pugsley scored in the 10th minutes on a pass from senior co-captain Paul Kelly. Kelly received the ball at midfield and made a move to the outside then dropped the ball off to Pugsley, who beat his man for an angle at the goal from the right.
The Spiders put another goal on the board at the 12:54 mark when junior Steven Wolfe scored his third goal of the season. Sophomore Joe Dincecco was fouled on a run down the left side which led to a restart. Senior co-captain Stephen Douglas delivered the free kick into the box allowing Wolfe to put it past the CofC keeper.
The Cougars came charging back late in the first half with two goals at the 25:50 and 43:33 mark. At the midway point the Spiders were outshot 14-8, but Richmond's keeper, freshman Eric Sciocchetti, turned away five.
Charleston resumed its attack in the second period taking its first lead in the 53rd minute off a corner. Troy Lesesne served a ball into the box which was flicked on by Keion Yearwood to Ben Hollingsworth for the score.
In the 78th minute a foul on the Cougars inside the box gave Douglas a chance to tie the game for Richmond. The Richmond, Va., native converted on the opportunity, beating Charleston's keeper to the bottom right, knotting the score at 3-3.
Neither team gained an advantage over the next 12 minutes sending the match into the first of two overtimes. College of Charleston proceeded to outshoot the Spiders 3-0 in the first extra period.
Sciocchetti came up big at the 96:59 mark by making a diving save to his right. The Cougars' Tony Myers served a ball to the far post from the right and Sciocchetti was there to meet Jeremy Gold's attempt on goal.
At the 101:50 mark, Charleston's Scott Milroth broke free in the middle of the Spider backfield and fired a shot to the right post, just past the outstreched arm of Sciocchetti, to end the game.
The Spiders return to action next Saturday, Sept. 25, at VCU in a kickoff scheduled for 7 PM. The Cougars host Jacksonville Sept. 23rd at 6:00 PM at Patriots Point.
