Charleston (4-3) dominated the first 20 minutes of play. Tony Myers scored at the 9:21 mark off a Jeremy Gold assist to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Milroth scored on a cross from Myers at the 15:34 mark for a 2-0 CofC advantage.
Jacksonville (4-3) kept fighting back, matching shot for shot with the Cougars but could not convert in the first half and trailed by two at intermission.
Tyler Stansberry's shot at 78:35 sailed just over Keith Wiggans' head to give the Dolphins a goal and cut the margin to 2-1. That would be as close as Jacksonville would get as Charleston held tight and came away with the victory.
Shots were even on both sides with each team garnering 13. Both goalkeepers came away with six saves but Charleston held the edge with two team saves to make it 8-6. Jacksonville totaled more corner kicks 7-3.
Charleston opens Southern Conference action Sunday at 2:00 PM when it takes on defending Southern Conference tournament champion Davidson at Patriots Point.
The Cougars fell in the tournament finals last year to the Wildcats, 1-0. Jacksonville plays host Florida International Monday, Sept 27th at the Ashley Sports Complex.
