The Citadel falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the SoCon), while the College of Charleston improves to 2-1-1 and 1-0.
The Cougars got on the board early as midfielder Claire Wigfall headed it into the net only two minutes into the game. Forward Megan Broderick and midfielder Caroline Wertis posted the second and third goals, respectively, to make the score 3-0. Lauren Merchant attempted the only shot for The Citadel in the first half.
The Dogs came out more aggressive in the second half and out-shot the Cougars 8-4. Shawna Hartman scored the lone goal with Merchant tallying her second assist of the year. A pass by Cougar midfielder Kate Defino found the foot of Amy Byrd who netted the final goal of the match.
Last year, The Citadel was out-shot by the Cougars 22-1 with the final score being 6-0. This time around, the Dogs held the Cougars to 15 shots and attempted nine of their own.
The Citadel will be traveling to Troy, AL to take on the Troy State Trojans on Sunday, September 12 at 2:00 PM. The College of Charleston hosts the Quality Inn & Suites Classic this weekend with the Cougars taking on Florida Atlantic Sept. 10th at 7:30 PM.
