Spartan freshman guard Kristen Boone scored a season-high 17 points to lead UNC Greensboro to a 71-50 victory over College of Charleston in a Southern Conference women's basketball game tonight at Fleming Gym. The Spartans have now won three straight games for the first time this season and five out of six for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign.
The Spartans (7-7, 4-3 SoCon) once again used their defense to win a ball game. UNCG held the Cougars to 29.3 percent (17-for-58) shooting and only 50 points scored. Over the last five games, the Spartans are yielding just 51.4 points per game. Meanwhile, UNCG has held back-to-back opponents to 50 points or less for the first time since the 2000-01 season. The Spartans downed Georgia Southern 63-49 on Saturday.
Boone, a freshman from Upper Marlboro, MD (Gwynn Park HS) converted 5-for-8 shots from the floor and all five of her attempts from the free throw line. The SoCon leader in steals, Boone came up with six more this evening to up her season total to 53. Ashley Current made an emergency start after Caroline Blair became ill just before tip-off and made the most of it. The junior forward from Orlando, FL (Colonial HS) tossed in a career-high 12 points and hauled in six rebounds. Sophomore forward Irene Otamiri added a season-high 10 points and grabbed a team-best nine boards.
Patrice Bryant led CofC (5-6, 2-4 SoCon) with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Rachel King had 12 points.
Trailing by one at the half 24-23, UNCG went on a 17-4 run over the first 6:55 of the second stanza to take a 40-28 lead. Current fueled the spurt with seven points, while freshman forward Jasmine Dixon capped it with back-to-back buckets. UNCG maintained a double digit lead throughout the remainder of the game, and extended its lead to as many as 22, 69-47, on an Amanda Eaton free throw with 23 seconds to go.
The Spartans converted 51.6 percent (16-of-31) of their shots in the second half. That marked the best shooting percentage for any half played this season. UNCG also had 16 steals, which marked the sixth time in the last seven games that the club has come up with at least 15 or more thefts.
UNCG improved to 7-1 this season and 48-13 over the last four seasons when the team scores 60 points or more. On the flip side, the Spartans have struggled to a 3-36 mark in games when they score less than 60 points.
UNCG now begins a three-game SoCon road swing on Saturday, January 15 at Western Carolina in Cullowhee. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm. Charleston will visit South Carolina on Thursday at 7 pm.
