Down by three with 11.2 second left in regulation, Marketta Talley came up with a crucial three-pointer to send the game into overtime where the Cougars held the Terriers to just two points en route to the 68-63 win in women's basketball action tonight in front of 286 fans at the
John Kresse Arena.
The Cougars win their second game in a row for the first time this season and first since early January of last year, a win over Winthrop Jan. 8th and Elon Jan. 10th.
Charleston reaches .500 with a 7-7 overall record and improves its SoCon mark to 4-4. Wofford drops to 3-14 and 1-9 in the league. The win is Charleston's fifth in a row over Wofford.
Charleston opened the game with a 15-2 run in the first five minutes before Wofford tallied its second score with a layup by Nakia Mister. Charleston took its biggest lead of the game at 12:58, leading 20-8, before the Terriers went on a 17-4 run over the next seven and a half minutes to take a one-point lead before a lay-up by Melissa Chambers gave the lead back to the Cougars. Charleston took the margin back to nine at 36-27 before another run by Wofford, this time an 8-0 run over the last two minutes, cut the lead to one as the first half ended. Charleston entered the locker room leading 36-35.
For the half Charleston shot 45.2 percent while Wofford shot 48.4 from the floor.
The Cougars went up early in the second half to take the 40-35, five-point lead, before the Terriers rallied to take the lead back at the 15:49 mark. With the exception of a 48-48 tie at 12:41, Wofford retained the lead until Talley's shot at the end of regulation. The Terriers could never put a string of baskets together and never led by more than three points the remainder of the second half to give the Cougars the opportunity to come back and tie and force the overtime.
The Cougars were the only team to score a basket in overtime with both Wofford points coming off of free throws. Despite going one-for-three in the extra five minutes, Charleston used a five-for-six effort from the charity stripe to come away with the final 68-63 win.
Wofford was led by Brie Bradshaw with her 14 points, with Ricaye Harris following with 13 points. Nakia Mister came close to a double-double with eight points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Bryant led the Cougars with 21 points, followed by Chambers' career-high 18 points. Chambers almost tallied her second career-double, leading Charleston with nine rebounds. Charleston shot 41.0 percent from the field, while the Terriers came away with 33.8 percent, after being held to just 25.9 in the second half. The Cougars out-rebounded the Terriers 46-41, but had more turnovers, 28-24. Charleston held the block advantage with the 8-1 mark, as Erika Smith and Erica Nesmith each tallied three blocks.
