Bastian Modhenke, Justin Malina, Philipp Koller and Alexandre Quilis all captured singles victories, pacing College of Charleston to a 5-2 Southern Conference men's tennis triumph over Elon Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Modhenke defeated Wilco Moggre 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Malina beat Sebastian Bredberg 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Koller decisioned Kyle Smialek 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 and Quilis downed Alex Garrett 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 in the league opener for the Cougars (3-1 overall, 1-0 Southern Conference).
Elon (1-4, 0-2) received a pair of wins in singles competition when Pramote Malasitt overcame Timo Siebert 7-5, 7-6 (5) at No. 1 and Austin Fenn shut out Liran Kling 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. The victories were the second ones in as many days for both Malasitt (4-1, 2-0) and Fenn (3-2, 2-0).
College of Charleston swept the three doubles bouts. Siebert and Modhenke staved off Malasitt and Fenn 8-6 at No. 1, Koller and Perry Allen out-played Moggre and George Memory 8-3 at No. 2 and Kling and Jimmy Pettit beat Bredberg and Smialek 8-4 at No. 3.
The Phoenix will return to action when Chattanooga visits the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Cougars host UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m. on Feb. 28.
