Gold, Toby Lead CofC Men's Soccer Over Elon, 3-2

Senior Jeremy Gold's two second-half goals and senior Darren Toby's three point performance pace the College of Charleston men's soccer team to victory over Elon, 3-2, at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C. on Saturday evening.
With the victory, CofC improves to 9-6-1 overall and 4-1-0 in SoCon play this season. Elon falls to 8-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the SoCon.
The match was scoreless in the first half, with CofC attempting three shots and two corner kicks, while Elon took one shot and one corner kick.
Toby scored his fourth goal of the season in the 48th minute to give the Cougars the early second-half advantage, 1-0. Junior Miles Alden-Dunn and senior Scott Milroth received credit for the assist.
Kiki Willis' netted home his seventh goal of the season, off an assist from Nick Aparicio, at the 64:31 mark to tie the match for the Phoenix, 1-1.
The Cougars responded with two consecutive goals from Gold to give CofC the advantage, 3-1.
Gold's first goal came from an unassisted free kick in the 75th minute. His second goal came with less than seven minutes left in the match, off an assist from Toby. Gold now has 12 goals this season, which leads the Southern Conference.
Aaron Parker notched his first goal of the season for Elon, off of a crossing pass from Matt Bengston, at the 84:30 mark to make the score, 3-2, in favor of the Cougars.
"Our guys refused to lose tonight," said head coach Ralph Lundy. "We fought hard all match, especially in the second half, and came out determined to earn the victory. Our seniors stepped up and guided us to the win."
Junior goalkeeper Corbin Waller had two saves in the match for CofC. Elon's Taylor Saxe had five saves.
Both teams attempted 12 shots, while Elon attempted four corner kicks to CofC's four.
With the victory, the Cougars continue their undefeated streak against Elon in men's soccer. CofC has never been defeated by Elon in seven lifetime meetings.
The victory also guarantees that the Cougars will host a SoCon tournament first-round match on Oct. 28. The opponent and time of the match has not been determined.
The Cougars return to action against SoCon foe Furman on Oct. 17 in Greenville, S.C. The match begins at 6 p.m.
