Freshman Chrissy Caruso scored the only goal of the match in the sixth minute of action off of a corner kick.
"I'm happy with the tremendous effort we put forth in our first game of the year," said head coach Kevin Dempsey. "We needed a complete effort from all of our players to beat a good team like Florida Atlantic on the road."
Florida Atlantic registered 17 shots, while Charleston registered five shots on goal.
"I was especially happy with the performance of Gia D'Agostino, who is coming back from a serious injury and missed a lot of our preseason training," said Dempsey. "Our two seniors showed tremendous leadership today, especially Caroline Wertis, who played all 90 minutes of the match."
Erin Smith notched five saves to gain her first shutout of the season.
"This match was a great win for us on the road and everyone played hard." said senior midfielder Caroline Wertis.
The Cougars next match will be against the Stetson Hatters on August 27 at 11 a.m. to conclude the Florida Atlantic Tournament before traveling to Conway, S.C., to play Coastal Carolina on August 31 at 6 p.m.
