CofC Drops Game at Davidson, 81-73

Senior Dontaye Draper's and sophomore Marcus Hammond's 20 points each were not enough to lift the College of Charleston men's basketball to victory as the Cougars lose a heartbreaker to Davidson, 81-73, before 4,254 spectators at the Belk Arena in Davidson, N.C. on Saturday evening.

The victory drops Charleston's record to 9-7 overall, 2-2 in the SoCon and snaps its' six game winning streak. The win improves Davidson to 13-3 overall, 4-0 in the SoCon and increases the Wildcats' winning streak to nine games.

Thomas Sander of Davidson scored five of his game-high 25 points in the first minute of action to give the Wildcats an early 5-0 advantage. Davidson continued to increase its lead and a converted free throw attempt by Sander with 9:12 left in the half gave the Wildcats their largest lead in the half, 24-11. Charleston proceeded to go on a 16-4 run and a Hammonds' lay-up with 4:43 left in the half made the score, 28-27, in favor of Davidson. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the half and Davidson led Charleston, 38-35, going into halftime.

For the first half, Charleston shot 46.4 percent from the field (13-28) and made six out of its nine free throw attempts, while Davidson shot 47.1 percent from the field and made five out its seven free throws.

Draper's jumper 1:43 into the second half quickly tied the game for Charleston, 40-40. However, a lay-up by William Archambault with 14:37 left in the second half capped a 16-5 run by Davidson to give the Wildcats the advantage, 56-45. Davidson continued to hold a double-figure scoring advantage into the second half, but a late 18-4 run capped by a Draper three-pointer with 4:08 left in the game made the score, 69-68, in favor of the Wildcats. However, the Cougars would not be able to take the lead and dropped the game, 81-73.

For the game, Davidson shot a better field goal percentage than Charleston, 48.3-46.8. Each team made 29 field-goals and Charleston even made more three-pointers than Davidson, 6-4. However, Davidson was able to convert on 19 out of 25 free-throw attempts, while Charleston made only nine out of 13 free-throws.

Charleston grabbed more rebounds than Davidson, 36-34 and had more assists, 15-9.

Junior Josh Jackson scored 17 points, two points off of his season-high 19 points, which he gained in Charleston's last game against Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 30, 2006. Sophomore Jermaine Johnson blocked a career-high four blocks in the loss for the Cougars. Senior David Lawrence led Charleston in rebounds with nine.

Stephen Curry scored 19 points for Davidson in the victory. The Wildcats also received a major contribution from Jason Richards, who scored 18 points and dished out eight assists. Sander grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Davidson in that department and notch a personal double-double.

Davidson will return to action on Jan. 10 at SoCon foe, Furman, in Greenville, S.C. The College of Charleston next game will also be against a SoCon foe, The Citadel, on Jan. 9 at the McAlister Fieldhouse, beginning at 7:05 p.m. The meeting will be the 79th game between the two Charleston, S.C. schools.
