Suzanne Sittko scored both goals as the Davidson Wildcats edged the College of Charleston 2-1 in overtime in SoCon women's soccer action Wednesday night in Davidson, N.C.
The loss, the first in the conference for the Cougars, ends their six-game unbeaten streak bringing their record to 8-6-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the league. Davidson rebounded after Sunday's loss to UNC Greensboro to improve to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the SoCon.
Sittko put Davidson on the board midway through the first half. Senior Nancy Haskell sent a pass in to the penalty box where Sittko turned and shot the ball into the top corner to make the score 1-0 (19:58).
Cougar midfielder Chrissy Caruso responded to even thescore in the 28th minute. After a Davidson foul, junior Danielle Jordan took the free kick for Charleston. Caruso was waiting inside the box where she headed the ball for the Cougar goal, her third of the season.
Five minutes into overtime, Sittko once again found the back of the net. Sophomore Katherine Laco crossed a pass from the left side in to the goal box. Sittko came from the near post to head the ball in for the golden goal and the end of the match.
The Wildcats took 12 shots on goal with several near misses. CofC goalie Sarah Wiggers made 10 saves on the evening.
Jordan and midfielder Megan Manthey led the Cougars in shots with two a piece.
CofC will play the last of three consecutive road games Sun., Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. when they face the Chattanooga Lady Mocs in Chattanooga, Tenn.
