Nick Chigges pitched six strong innings with seven strikeouts and Chris Campbell had three hits and four runs batted in to lead the College of Charleston to a 15-3 win over Cleveland State in college baseball action before 310 on Saturday at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 6-1 on the season while the Vikings fell to 2-3.
Chigges (2-0) allowed just three hits and three runs with four walks.
Charleston started the game with four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Ben Lasater and a two-run single by Michael Harrington.
Cleveland State responded in the top of the second inning by scoring two runs on a single by Vasili Pahoulis, which scored Josh Geric and Jeff Schellhammer.
The Cougars held a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Campbell's double to left in the inning to score Oliver Marmol and Clay McCord made the score 9-3 in favor of the Cougars and sparked a seven run inning.
Marchant's single to right center to score McCord in the bottom of the seventh would be the final run scored in the game.
Jeremy Hartman suffered the loss allowing six runs on six hits over 1 2/3 innings. For Charleston, Curtis Dowling replaced Chigges and pitched two shutout innings before Russ Tomlinson closed out the game for the Cougars with two strikeouts in the ninth.
CofC plays host to George Mason in a noon start on Sunday. The Cougars defeated the Patriots, 9-3, on Friday. Cleveland State plays at Charleston Southern at 1:00 on Sunday.
