Davidson guard Stephen Curry scored 29 points leading the Wildcats to a hard-fought, 79-75, win over the College of Charleston in Southern Conference action before an overflow crowd of 5,368 at the Carolina First Arena on Monday.
With the win, Davidson improved to 9-2 overall, 2-0 in the Southern Conference, while the Cougars fell to 10-2 and 2-1.
Davidson went into the break with a 44-33 lead after being paced by an even 50 percent shooting performance from the field hitting 17-of-34 attempts. The Cougars got 11 points and seven boards from Jermaine Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the first stanza.
In the second half, the Cougars made several furious runs at the Davidson lead, tying the game up on three separate occasions throughout the half. The Cougars used a 10-2 run to cut the margin to 77-75 on a jumper by Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) with 51 seconds left. Curry hit two-of-four free throw attempts down the stretch, including the game-clincher with five seconds left.
Goudelock led all Charleston scorers with 22 points, while Johnson added 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Cougars are idle until Jan 7th when they travel to top-ranked North Carolina. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m.
