Mike Hentz, Michael Kohn and Michael Harrington homered and Clay Caulfield pitched into the sixth inning leading the College of Charleston to a 12-4 win over rival Charleston Southern in college baseball action before 411 at Patriots Point Stadium on Wednesday.
The Cougars, who open a three-game series with Texas-San Antonio on Friday at 5 p.m., improved to 8-2 on the season. The Bucs fell to 2-7.
Mark Perry's homer down the left field line on the game's third pitch gave Charleston Southern a 1-0 lead. Harrington's RBI ground out in the bottom of the first tied the game at 1-all.
Gabe Marchant's two-run single in the second inning extended Charleston's lead to 4-1. Austin Morgan's two-run single in the third and Hentz's three-run homer to left in the fifth inning gave the Cougars a 9-1 advantage.
After Charleston Southern's Tom Burkett belted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to cut the Cougars' lead to 9-4, Kohn belted his club-leading sixth homer of the season to give Charleston a 10-4 lead.
Harrington's fifth homer of the season, was a towering two-run shot to center in the eighth gave Charleston a 12-4 lead.
Clay Caulfield (2-0) allowed two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of work. Brandon Roberts (0-3) allowed nine runs, eight earned, on five hits with four walks over the first 4 1/3 innings.
