Clay McCord had three hits and drove in two runs and Clay Caulfield pitched into the sixth inning lifting the College of Charleston to a 4-2 win over Charleston Southern in college baseball action at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday. The Cougars also downed the Bucs, 5-2, in the completion of their April 1 game that was suspended because of rain.
Charleston, which opens a three-game Southern Conference series with Elon at 6:00 on Friday at Patriots Point Stadium, improved to 25-12. The Bucs fell to 13-23.
Austin Morgan's two-run double in the fifth inning staked the Cougars to a 2-1 lead. McCord added a two-run single with two outs in the sixth that scored Mike Hentz and Stuart Haywood and stretched Charleston's advantage to 4-1.
Caulfield (4-2) earned the win allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over the first 5 1/3 innings. Michael Kohn pitched a scoreless ninth with a strikeout for his first save. T.J. Green (0-2) suffered the loss in both games after surrendering three runs on five hits over 1 2/3 innings of relief in the nightcap. Green allowed three runs on three hits over four innings in the April 1st contest.
In the completion of the suspended game, Charleston's Jordan Tiegs scattered five hits and struck out 12 en route to the win.
Brandon Sizemore and Gabe Marchant collected two hits each and Hentz doubled and scored two runs. The Bucs got two hits each from Mark Perry and Tyler Thornburg.
Tiegs (1-0) surrendering two runs, one earned, over the first eight innings. Jesse Simpson worked the ninth for his sixth save of the season. Green was the starter and loser for Charleston Southern.
