ASU Beats CofC Men's Tennis, 4-1


BOONE, N.C.- The Appalachian State men's tennis team pulled off an impressive win Saturday night against SoCon foe College of Charleston, as the Mountaineers defeated the Cougars 4-1. With the win Appalachian improves to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in SoCon action, while CofC drops to 7-15 on the season and 1-8 in the conference.

The match got off to a strong start as the Apps were able to capture the crucial doubles point.

At the No. 2 doubles spot, the duo of Lee Floyd and Peter Jacobs were able to grab a commanding win over Joe Nicolazzi and Ross Moyer, winning 8-4. Bobby Lake and Trent Constance put up a solid effort at the No. 1 spot as they were down 7-4 at one point, but were not able to rally a comeback and fell just short, losing 8-6.

The deciding match in doubles play came down to the No. 3 spot, as Ryan Brookshaw and David Doverspike were able to pick up a win against Don Murray and Jimmy Petit to give ASU the doubles win.

The Mountaineers posted solid performances in singles play as well, as three Apps were able to close out the match to give Appalachian the go-ahead win.

At the No.1 position, Lake battled back and forth with Omer Abramovich. Lake narrowly won the first set 7-5, and was tied with Abramovich in the second set at five all, before Abramovich retired, to give Lake the win.

Ryan Brookshaw was not quite as lucky as Lake at the No. 2 spot, as he lost in two sets to his opponent, falling 6-3 and 7-5.

At the No.3 and No.4 positions, Constance and Jacobs notched important wins over their competition, each winning in two sets to help lead ASU to the win.
