Boone, N.C. -- Joey Bergman's leadoff homer in the top of the 10th inning lifted the College of Charleston to a 7-6 win over Appalachian State and a sweep of its three-game Southern Conference series at Smith Stadium on Sunday. The Cougars also won the completion of Saturday's suspended game, 8-2, earlier in the day.
Charleston, which plays host to Savannah State in a 6:00 start on Tuesday, improved to 22-9 overall and 8-1 in league play. Appalachian State fell to 15-17 and 1-8.
Bergman belted a 1-1 pitch from Appalachian State's Garrett Sherrill over the centerfield fence for his first homer of the season and the Cougars' fourth solo blast in the game.
Charleston, which trailed 2-0, tied a school record in the top of the third inning when Mike Hentz, Clay McCord and Gabe Marchant hit consecutive homers to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. The only other time Charleston has hit three straight homers came in a 17-5 win over Western Carolina on March 20, 2005 when D.J. Wabick, Chris Campbell and Jess Easterling hit first-inning homers in a row.
Austin Morgan's RBI double in the fourth gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead. Brandon Sizemore's two-run single in the fifth inning stretched Charleston's lead to 6-3. ASU got three runs in the ninth to tie the game at 6-all scoring on a bases loaded wild pitch and Jason Altenhoff's two-run single.
Jesse Simpson (5-2) picked up the win in relief pitching the final 2 2/3 innings. Charleston relief pitcher Jake Goldberg worked five middle innings and blanked ASU on just three hits with three strikeouts. Sherrill (0-2) was the tough-luck loser surrendering only one run on just three hits with seven strikeouts over the final five innings.
In the completion of the game suspended due to fog on Saturday, the Cougars got RBI singles from Stuart Haywood and Mike Hentz. Gabe Marchant blasted his team-leading 12th homer of the season, a solo shot to right center in the third inning that gave Charleston a 2-1 lead.
Jeremie Tice's two-run homer in the eighth was his 10th of the season and gave Charleston an 8-2 lead.
Charleston's freshman Casey Lucchese (4-1) picked up the win working the first six innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on just five hits with four strikeouts. Danny Meszaros picked up his first save when he blanked ASU on one hit with two strikeouts over the final three innings. Matt Andress (4-2) suffered the loss.
