Participating against NCAA participants Duke and Delaware in the Charleston Invitational, as well as travelling to the Oregon State Classic, the Stetson Invitational and the South Carolina Classic, highlight the College of Charleston's 30-match regular season 2008 volleyball schedule, it was announced Monday.
“This is going to be a very challenging schedule but one that I think excites this team,” said second-year coach Jason Kepner, who led the Cougars to a 26-8 record in 2007, their seventh consecutive Southern Conference regular season title and their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. “I feel the pre-season will really prepare this young team for a run at our eighth straight Championship.”
Charleston opens the season Aug. 29-30 at the Oregon State Classic and faces PAC-10 foes Portland State, the Beavers and Wyoming, before travelling back to the east coast to take part in the Stetson Invitational Sept. 5-6, facing the Hatters, Robert Morris and Nicholls State. The Cougars take on the Gamecocks, Winthrop and NCAA participant Clemson in the South Carolina Classic Sept. 12-13.
“Our opening weekend out west will be a good chance for us to play in a Pac-10 environment against three very good teams. We are also getting Oregon State to come to Charleston in 2010. All three road tournaments will be great tests for our team as we gear up for conference play.”
Charleston's opens its home slate with the Charleston Invitational. The Cougars face Duke Sept. 19th before taking on Gardner Webb and Delaware the 20th.
“I am very excited to have Duke, Gardner-Webb and Delaware coming to Charleston this year. We play very well at home and it will give our fans a chance to see some great non-conference volleyball.”
The Cougars have 12 home and 18 road matches and will play home-and-home series with seven of 11 league opponents. Charleston hosts SoCon newcomer Samford and Chattanooga, and travels to UNC Greensboro and Elon. The Cougars open SoCon play at Wofford Sept. 26, with their first home league match against Georgia Southern Oct. 3.
The 2008 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships will be held Nov. 21-23 at Fleming Gym in Greensboro, N.C.
