Mt. Pleasant, S.C. --- A goal on a penalty kick by Megan Manthey was the deciding factor, as The College of Charleston women's soccer team defeated High Point, 1-0, on Saturday night at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars move to a perfect 7-0-0 on the year to continue their best start in program history. High Point falls to 3-2-3 with the loss.
“This match tonight definitely had the feel of a conference match,” said head coach Kevin Dempsey. “I thought we came out a little flat at first, but the experienced players on our team stepped up when they needed to. We'll take any win we can and we're all very excited to be 7-0 right now.”
In the first half, the defensive units for both team's dominated, as both High Point and the Cougars each had just two shots on goal in the period.
In the second half, it was more of the same, until the 58th minute when High Point committed a foul on Charleston's end of the field. Manthey then lined up for a penalty shot and fired the ball into the right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
From there, the Cougar defense held on and recorded their sixth shutout in seven games played on the year.
The Cougars will return to action on Friday, September 19th when they hit the road to take on Kennesaw State. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
