Seniors Matt Morris and Zach Prince each netted their fifth goals of the season against the Eagles. Both Cougars scored goals in the last conference match CofC played - a 2-0 victory over UNC Greensboro on Oct. 10.
Morris struck first for Charleston, scoring on a header off a pass from senior Steven Nagy just 4:05 into the second half. Freshman defender Robbie Benson nearly added a second goal at the 57:20 mark before the shot was blocked at the last second by Georgia Southern's Brennan Peacock.
The Eagles (0-11-1, 0-2 SoCon) struggled to score as they registered eight second-half shots against the Cougars. Senior Dally Hall attempted to score off a corner kick at 66:52 but was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper Clark Hankins.
Prince locked in the win for College of Charleston with 10 minutes remaining in the match when he scored off a penalty kick for the Cougars. The goal is his second unassisted score of the season.
Hankins made four saves while facing 11 shots from Georgia Southern. The Cougars drilled 21 shots over 90 minutes, forcing Eagle goalkeeper to make six saves to keep CofC from increasing the score. The Cougars also held a 10-7 advantage on corner kicks.
College of Charleston returns to Patriots Point for a three-game homestand. The Cougars will host Winthrop in non-conference action on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
