Phoenix midfielder Justin Wyatt lifted the ball over the hands of the Cougar goalkeeper on a shot from eight yards out in the 40th minute of the first half. The goal proved to be the deciding factor as Elon won its straight conference match, boosting its overall record to 5-4-1. The Cougars fell to 6-6 and 0-2 in the league.
Although the Phoenix outnumbered the Cougars in shots, 13-7, the Charleston defense, led by junior Sean Flatley, forced nine shots off goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Flato stopped three shots.
College of Charleston recorded seven shots on the evening, with juniors Branko Gavric and Jake Helmig each shooting twice against Elon.
The Cougars travel to Greensboro, N.C. for a Saturday evening matchup with Spartans.
