GREENSBORO, N.C. - College of Charleston men's soccer won its first Southern Conference game in decisive fashion with a 2-0 shutout over UNC Greensboro on Saturday evening.
Senior Zach Prince was the first to strike for the Cougars (7-6-0, 1-2 SoCon), drawing UNCG goalkeeper Peyton Ford out and then skirting around him to shoot from 15 yards out. Junior midfielder Branko Gavric was credited with an assist on the play that put CofC up 1-0 at the 14:34 mark.
The two teams battled back and forth for the next 65 minutes before senior Matt Morris found the back of the net at 75:58 to solidify the Cougars' victory. Morris cut down the middle of the box to pick up a corner kick pass from Prince and place the ball in the back of the net for his fourth score of the season.
The Spartans (3-6-3, 1-1-1) held a slight advantage on shots (10-8) but outnumbered the Cougars on corner kicks 7-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper Clark Hankins made four saves on the evening for his third shutout of the season. UNCG's Ford stopped two shots.
College of Charleston returns home for a non-conference matchup against Wake Forest on Tuesday at Patriots Point Stadium.
