
Cougars Take on Fifth-Ranked North Carolina

The College of Charleston women's basketball team travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. Nov. 13th for a 7 p.m. tip-off against the fifth ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in the Dean E. Smith Center. It is the season-opener for both teams.
The Cougars, who were picked to finish third in the Southern Conference by the league coaches and media, are coming off a 66-44 exhibition win over USC Aiken Nov. 7. Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) led Charleston with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C.) followed with 11 points and eight rebounds.
North Carolina is coming off a 121-52 exhibition win over Carson-Newman Nov. 10th. Six Tar Heels scored in double-figures with Krista Gross leading the way with 16 points.
The last meeting between the two schools came Nov. 27, 2007, with UNC coming away with the 102-58 win in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels own the all-time series, 9-1.
The Cougars are 21-12 all-time in their season-openers and won last year's with a 76-62 victory at Charleston Southern. This is the first time Charleston has opened with a nationally-ranked opponent. CofC is 0-5 against teams ranked in the top-25.
Charleston is coming off a successful 2008-09 season. The Cougars won a record 23 overall games and 14 league games, losing in their first Southern Conference Championship appearance in triple overtime, 101-87, against Western Carolina
Next up for the Cougars will be another ACC foe, as Clemson comes to Charleston Nov. 16th for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Tigers have not been to Charleston since Jan. 5, 1995 when they took the 81-27 win that night at the John Kresse Arena. Both teams have met 16 times with the record tied at 8-8. Clemson has won the last seven meetings, including its last, a 64-42 win Nov. 13, 2006 in Littlejohn Coliseum.
