Joseph Harris scored 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, while Chad Gray added 17 points as Coastal Carolina knocked off the College of Charleston, 70-59, in the season opener for both school's before 1,062 at Kimbel Arena on Friday.
Charleston (0-1) plays host to Winthrop at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Carolina First Arena. Coastal Carolina (1-0) snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Cougars. The Chants won for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
The Cougars, who built a 29-28 lead at intermission, got a team-high 19 points from Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) and the first career double-double for freshman Willis Hall (Charlotte, N.C.) who scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
"I thought we came out of the gates pretty well," said Cougar coach Bobby Cremins, whose team built an 18-9 first half advantage. "We lost our poise late in the half and in the beginning of the second half. However, our kids responded with a nice run, but we couldn't keep it going. "Coastal (Carolina) has a very nice team, very athletic and they'll be very tough, particularly in this building."
The Chanticleers opened the second half with a 22-12 run to take a 54-41 lead and command of the game with 7:38 remaining.
A 3-pointer by Goudelock cut the margin to 64-59 with 42 seconds left, but that''s as close as the Cougars could get.
The Cougars also got 10 points each from Tony White, Jr. (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) The Chanticleers, who shot 41.8 percent from the floor, outrebounded the Cougars 49-30. Charleston shot 41.4 percent from the floor connecting on 24-of-58 attempts.
