Charleston, which plays at East Tennessee State on Nov. 25, improved to 1-1 on the season. Winthrop fell to 1-1. The Cougars have won 40 of their last 41 home openers.
After Winthrop closed an 8-point deficit to 59-57 on a dunk by Andre Jones, Goudelock hit a deep 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:34 left that sparked a 10-0 run by the Cougars to end the game.
The Cougars' defense limited the Eagles to just 35.7 percent shooting from the floor, hitting on just 25-of-70 attempts. Winthrop was 0-for-13 from 3-point territory.
Tony White, Jr. (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished with 11 points and six rebounds for the Cougars. Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) had seven points and seven boards. Simmons hit 6-of-7 from the field and added a game-high four blocks.
Jones led the Eagles with 11 points, while Matt Morgan added 10 points off the bench. The Eagles got a game-high 11 rebounds and seven points from Mantoris Robinson. The Eagles out-rebounded Charleston 41-38, including 20-9 on the offensive glass.
Goudelock and Willis Hall (Charlotte, N.C.) scored seven points each helping the Cougars to a 30-29 lead at intermission.
The Cougars, who shot 52.4 percent in the second half, hit 47.9 percent of their field goals for the game. The Cougars connected on 9-of-23 from behind the arc.
