Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) poured in 25 points and Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) equaled his career-high with 16 points as the College of Charleston held on for a 78-67 Southern Conference win over Western Carolina before 2,874 at Carolina First Arena on Wednesday.
College of Charleston, which plays host to The Citadel at 4 p.m. on Saturday, improved to 18-6 overall and 10-4 in SoCon play. Western Carolina, who is 12-12 and 7-7, plays host to Appalachian State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Charleston, which shot a season-best 63.4 percent from the floor for the game, shot a sizzling 77.3 percent in the first half en route to a 42-26 lead at intermission. The Cougars raced out to a 40-19 advantage with 1:22 remaining in the half before the Catamounts closed on a 7-2 run.
Western Carolina, who got 14 second half points from Brandon Giles, closed to within 65-60 on a 3-pointer by Harouna Mutombo with 4:05 left. Mutomobo, a freshman, finished with a team-high 25 points, including 17 after intermission.
Down the stretch the Cougars hit 14 of 15 free throws, including 13 in a row at one stretch, to secure the win. The Cougars were 18-for-24 from the line for the game.
Charleston, which held a 31-25 rebounding edge, hit on 17-of-22 from the field over the first 20 minutes and 26-of-41 for the game. Western Carolina shot 46.0 percent from the floor for the game connecting on 29-of-63 attempts.
Goudelock, a sophomore, hit 9-of-13 field goal tries, 5-of-7 from 3-point land and both of his free throws. Monroe hit 6-of-7 field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from the 3-point line. Antwaine Wiggins (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Dustin Scott (Jamestown, S.C.) added 10 points each for the Cougars. Scott pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Giles finished with 16 points while Greg Avery added seven points and a team-high five rebounds.
