MT. PLEASANT, S.C. ? The College of Charleston men's tennis squad dropped a 4-3 decision to Winthrop on Sunday at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-2 on the season while Winthrop improves to 1-1 with the victory.
In doubles, the Winthrop took two of the three matches to earn a team point. Each match was decided by a 9-8 score and also went to several tiebreakers, with the Eagles picking up the point with victories at the number one and two spots.
In singles, Winthrop swept the one through three spots to win the match. The Cougars, however, did not go down without a fight, as they picked up three points in the remaining singles matches on the day. Ton Delme (Hamoir, Belgium) won at number four singles in straight sets, while Mickael Trintignac (Le Cannet, France) and Joe Nicolazzi (St. Louis, Mo.) earned wins at the five and six spots, each in three sets.
The College of Charleston men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13th when they play St. Bonaventure and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The Virginia Tech match begins at 10 a.m., while the match with St. Bonaventure begins at 3 p.m.
