CofC, Osterman Shutdown No. 10 Coastal Carolina, 3-0

CONWAY, S.C. ? College of Charleston starting pitcher Nick Osterman (Lexington, Ky.) threw six and two thirds of scoreless baseball to lead the Cougars to a 3-0 win over No. 10 Coastal Carolina on Wednesday in front of 622 at Watson Stadium.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 14-3 overall on the year, snap a Coastal Carolina 14-game winning streak and shutout the Chanticleers for the first time since March 7, 2007. Charleston returns to action on Friday, March 20th when they travel to Samford for a 6 p.m. start. CCU falls to 17-2 with the loss.

Charleston struck first in the top of the first, as Ryan Daniels (Victoria, Tex.) laced an RBI single through the right side with one out that scored Clay McCord (Atlanta, Ga.), who led the game off with a walk.

The Cougars added their second run in the fifth after McCord led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third and scored on consecutive balk calls on CCU pitcher Matt Rein. Charleston added a third run in the sixth after Mike Hentz (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led off the inning with a single, then scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs.

That was all the runs Charleston would need on the day, as Osterman and reliever Aaron Bouronich (Summerville, S.C.) shutdown the Chanticleer lineup all afternoon.

Osterman allowed just four hits and struck out a career-high eight to earn the win (1-0), while Bouronich went two and one thirds in relief to earn his first save of the year, after not allowing a hit and striking out one.

At the plate for Charleston, Henz went 2-4 with a run scored, while Daniels also went 2-4 with an RBI.

For Coastal Carolina, starter Brad Goldberg suffered the loss (1-1).
