ELON, N.C. ? The College of Charleston men's tennis team shutout Chattanooga, 4-0 in the First Round of the 2009 Southern Conference Men's Tennis Championships at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 10-13 on the year and advanced to the quarterfinals of the SoCon Championship, where they will take on third-seeded Wofford tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Chattanooga ends their season with a 2-18 overall mark.
Charleston got off to a quick start in doubles play, as the team of Omer Abramovich and Joe Nicolazzi shutout UTC's Gordon Rudell and Rick vande Bouvenkamp 8-0 in the number three spot. The Cougars took the team point when Mickael Trintignac and Mickael Boyer knocked off Alex Butnarcuic and Dakota Pate 8-3 at number two.
In singles, the Cougars quickly won three matches to get to the four total points needed to clinch the victory.
Nicolazzi started things off with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sam Parfitt at number six singles, while Tom Delme was a straight set victor in the number four spot over Pate (6-1, 6-3). Trintignac's 6-3, 6-3 win at number three singles over Butnarcuic won the match for Charleston.
