BURLINGTON, N.C. ? The College of Charleston men's tennis team upset third-seeded Wofford, 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Championship at the Burlington Tennis Center on Friday.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 11-13 and advanced to the SoCon semifinals where they will take on second-seed Elon on Saturday at 2 p.m. Wofford ends their season with a 13-11 record.
In doubles, the team of Tom Delme and Lukas Koncilia was victorious in the number one spot 8-5 over Danny Manlow and Stuart Robertson. After Wofford won at number two , the team of Omer Abramovich and Joe Nicolazzi defeated Scott Collins and Tinus Van Wyk 9-7 to capture a team point for the Cougars.
In singles, Wofford got off to a good start, as Paul Bartholomy was a victor in the number six spot. However, Charleston would win three matches, all in straight sets, to get to the four total points needed to clinch victory.
Abramovich was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number one singles over Robertson and Mickael Trintignac was a 6-3, 6-2 victor over Van Wyk in the number three spot. Charleston clinched the match when Mickael Boyer beat Alan Donald 6-1, 6-3 in the number five spot.
