
Four CofC Players Selected in the MLB Draft

College of Charleston senior outfielder Matt Mansilla and junior infielder Joey Bergman were selected in the 22nd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. Mansilla was taken by the Detroit Tigers, while Bergman was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals. Senior second baseman Brandon Sizemore was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 30th round.
On Thursday, senior pitcher Jesse Simpson was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 40th round.
Mansilla, from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hit .330 with a team-leading 19 homers and 64 runs driven in. He scored 54 runs and was 16-of-19 in stolen bases. Mansilla was named first team All-SoCon by the league's media and earned second team honors by the league's coaches.
Bergman, from Jacksonville, Fla., was the named the Southern Conference's Player of the Year. Bergman is second in the nation with a .452 batting average and leads the country with 88 runs scored. Bergman added 15 homers and 57 RBI. He was 24-26 in stolen bases and led the Cougars with 25 doubles.
Sizemore, from Jacksonville, Fla., was a first team All-Southern Conference selection after hitting .318 with 17 homers and a team-leading 74 RBI. Sizemore added 20 doubles, 10 stolen bases and scored 67 runs.
Simpson, from Baton Rouge, La., was 18-7 over his two seasons with the Cougars. He posted a 9-4 record with a 5.52 ERA this past season. He struck out 84 in 89.2 innings of work. He was 9-3 in 2008. He was 9-3 in 2008. He was named second team All-SoCon this past season.
The Cougars, who posted a 35-22 overall record this season, have had 28 players selected over the past five seasons.
