
Charleston Sweeps William & Mary; Clinches Spot in CAA Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball completed a three-game sweep over William & Mary with a 12-2 seven inning victory at Patriots Point Saturday afternoon.
Freshmen Nick Diaz, redshirt junior Braeden Smith and graduate Will Tippett all hit three run homers against the Tribe.
With the win, CofC clinched second place in the CAA South Division and earned a spot in the 2026 CAA Baseball Championship. The tournament will be hosted by UNCW in Wilmington, N.C. at Brooks Field from May 20-23. Charleston will be making its 27th consecutive CAA Tournament appearance next week.
CRITICAL POINTS
- Trailing 1-0, redshirt senior Ethan Plyler extended his hit streak as he led off the bottom of the second with a single before Smith doubled down the left field line and Charleston manufactured two runs to take a 2-1 advantage.
- William & Mary tied the game in the following inning, but the Cougars capitalized on a Tribe error as Diaz crushed a three-run homer to left field and Charleston plated four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 6-2.
- Smith and Tippett both hit two-out three-run blasts to put CofC in front 12-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
- Redshirt sophomore Ryan Hench, freshman Kaden Myers and redshirt senior Alex Lyon combined to shutout the Tribe over the last three innings as Charleston defeated William & Mary 12-2 in seven innings.
OF NOTE
- Charleston improves to 37-14 against William & Mary and 21-4 at home. The Cougars are 23-2 against the Tribe in the last 25 games.
- CofC has also won the last 12 home games versus W&M.
- Redshirt senior Alex Lyon appeared in his 100th career game and set a new program record for the most appearances in CofC history.
- Redshirt senior Ethan Plyler now has a base hit in 13 straight ballgames.
- Tippett extended his hitting streak to seven games and went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in three runs.
- Diaz, Smith and Tippett all hit three-run homers Saturday afternoon.
