
CofC Women?s Soccer Team Registers 2-1 Victory at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. - A goal by Emily Morgan (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 79th minute was the difference, as the College of Charleston women's soccer team defeated Presbyterian, 2-1 on Monday night.
With the win, the Cougars moved to 1-1 on the season, while Presbyterian fell to 0-2 with the loss. Charleston returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 4 when they travel to the High Point Tournament to take on host High Point at 7:30 p.m.
In the first half, the Cougars got on the board first when Hannah Gmerek (Anderson, S.C.) scored the first goal of the 2009 season off a Morgan assist from six yards out.
Despite outshooting the Blue Hose 9-0 in the first period, the match was tied at one going into the half, as Presbyterian got on the board after a Charleston defender deflected a shot into her own net in the 42nd minute.
In the second half, the Cougars continued to control the pace of play, but could not get a shot past Presbyterian goalie Sara Beth Anderson, who made five saves in the period.
Morgan, however, scored the game-winner on a corner kick from 30 yards out with a little over 10 minutes left in the contest. Charleston then hung on over the final moments of the match to capture their first victory of the 2009 season.
Overall, the Cougars outshot the Blue Hose 21-5 and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Gmerek led the Charleston offense taking four shots, while Brittany Schneider (Tyrone, Ga.) fired three shots, two of which were on goal.
Charleston goalie Sarah Wiggers (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned her first win of the year between the pipes, while Presbyterian goalies Anderson and Abby Young split time in net and made nine total saves.
