No. 14 Clemson Sweeps 68th-Ranked Cougars on Saturday

CLEMSON, S.C. - College of Charleston women's tennis fell to 14th-ranked Clemson on Saturday afternoon in the team's second road game of the season. The Tigers swept the Cougars, 7-0, at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center.
Clemson (1-0) won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) and freshman Irene Viana (Paris, France/Lycee de Montgeron) won two sets against Estefania Balda and Josipa Bek, before falling 8-2. Top-seeded Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) and No. 2 Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) each took a set from their opponents, losing 8-1.
Dowse faced the ninth-ranked player in the nation in Bek, who earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory, in the top flight. At the No. 3 spot, Casey, who is ranked 102nd in singles competition, was upset by No. 113 Ina Hadziselimovic, 6-0, 6-1. In the fourth flight, Newman battled back against 61st-ranked Nelly Ciolkowski after dropping the first set 6-0. After staying close throughout the second set, she eventually yielded a 7-6 decision.
The Cougars (0-2) continue on the seven-game road trip that opens their 2010 season. Their next stop is Deland, Fla., where they will face Stetson on Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
