
Late Goal Lifts Cougars

Jake Helmig (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) scored in the 88th minute to break a scoreless tie and give the College of Charleston men's soccer team its eighth win in a row with a 1-0 victory over the Elon Phoenix tonight in Elon, N.C.
Charleston improves to 8-2-1 overall and remains perfect in the Southern Conference with a 3-0 mark. Elon falls to 4-3-4 and 2-1-0 in the SoCon. The Cougars avenged a 2-0 loss in the semifinals of last season's Southern Conference Tournament Semifinals and improved their career mark over the Phoenix to 10-3.
After a back-and-forth battle for 87 minutes that saw of total of 23 shots taken, with Charleston holding the final 15-8 advantage, Sean De Silva (Port of Spain, Trinidad) took one of the Cougars' 11 corner kicks and crossed the ball into the front of the Elon net, where Helmig bumped it into the far corner for the game-winner (87:29). It was Helmig's second goal of the season and fourth of his career.
The College was led by De Silva with five shots, followed by Ralph Lundy, III, with four. James Carroll, Chris Thomas and Gabe Latigue paced Elon with two shots apiece. Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland) picked up the win in goal for the Cougars posting three saves. Elon's Clint Irwin played 85:38 in goal and had five saves. Reed Dillard came into the game at the 4:22 mark, and had one goal against, taking the loss.
The Cougars finish their two-game road trip with a stop at UNC Greensboro Wednesday, Oct. 13. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
