GREENSBORO, N.C. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team played 110 minutes to a 2-2 draw against UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference action in the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night.
No. 25 CofC stays unbeaten in 10 games and moves to 8-2-2 (3-0-1 SoCon) while UNCG moves to 5-5-2 (1-1-1 SoCon).
The Cougars allowed an early goal but responded with two of their own before the Spartans equalized in the 85th minute, forcing overtime. CofC had a 4-1 shot advantage in the overtime periods but neither team converted until the draw went final.
"UNCG started with more intensity and quality than us in the first half and as a result we were behind, 1-0, at the half," said head coach Ralph Lundy. "I'm proud of our response in the second half as we took a 2-1 lead and had chances to put the game away.
"Unfortunately, we gave up a late goal and missed an opportunity to get a big away win."
The Spartans opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Aaron Reifschneider sent a long throw-in into the box from the right side. Hakan Ilhan forwarded the ball to Brian Graham with his heel and Graham tucked it inside the left post for his first goal of the season.
The Cougars failed to muster a shot for the remainder of the first half and went into the locker room trailing by the 1-0 deficit.
The Cougars dominated the second half, however, and equalized just 8:35 into the period. Sean Flatley (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) got the ball through a crowd in the box to Tony Kattreh (Neptune Beach, Fla.) who lifted a shot into the upper-right corner of the net to equalize the game.
The Cougars continued to dominate the second half until finally gaining the lead in the 78th minute on one of their game-high six corner kicks. Sean de Silva (Port of Spain, Trinidad) sent the entry ball into the box where Shawn Ferguson (Rock Hill, S.C.) elevated above his defender and headed the ball into the net.
As CofC looked to close the win, UNCG formed a run which resulted in Adam Shore crossing the ball into the box and Ilhan heading it home just before he collided with the left goal post in the 85th minute of the match.
The equalizing goal would ultimately be the last of the match as the teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods before reaching the 2-2 final.
CofC benefited from a 21-11 shot advantage highlighted by a 13-4 advantage in the second half.
No. 25 CofC returns home to host Georgia Southern in further SoCon action on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Patriots Point. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
